How to Get a Free LLM API Key (No Credit Card Required)
If you searched for a free LLM API key, you probably expected a long signup form, an email verification step, a billing page, and maybe a waitlist. With DreamPrompting it is one Google sign-in and a copy button. The key is free, there is no credit card, and the whole thing takes seconds. This guide walks through the real flow: where to get your key, how to send it, how to create extra keys or revoke one, and how to check how much quota you have left.
Get your free LLM API key in three steps
There is no application to fill in and nothing to approve. Go from nothing to a working key like this:
- Open dreamprompting.com/account.
- Click "Sign in with Google". No password to invent, no email confirmation loop, and no card is requested.
- Your first key is created for you automatically. Hit the copy button next to it, and you are done.
Keys look like dp- followed by a random string. Treat it like a password: put it in an environment variable, keep it out of client-side JavaScript, and never commit it to a public repo. The same account page shows how many requests each key has used, so you always know where you stand.
Under the hood, DreamPrompting is a gateway with automatic failover across many upstream providers. When one is slow or unavailable, your request is routed to another, so you get an answer without managing any of that complexity yourself. You can browse the available options on the models page or try it live in the chat playground before you write a single line of code.
Send the key as a Bearer token
Authentication is the standard OpenAI arrangement: an Authorization header holding Bearer plus your key. Every endpoint expects it, including the model list and the quota check. Here is the simplest possible request.
curl https://dreamprompting.com/api/v1/chat/completions \
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"model": "auto",
"messages": [
{"role": "user", "content": "Explain what an LLM gateway does in one sentence."}
]
}'
The "model": "auto" value lets the gateway pick a good default and fail over as needed. You can also request a specific model with the provider/model format. To see the full list, send a request to GET /api/v1/models with the same header. If your key is missing or wrong you get a 401, which is almost always a typo or a stale copy of the string.
Use it with the Python OpenAI SDK
Because the endpoint is OpenAI-compatible, the official client works with two changed lines: the base URL, and your key in the api_key field it already has. Here is a complete Python example.
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://dreamprompting.com/api/v1",
api_key="YOUR_API_KEY",
)
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="auto",
messages=[
{"role": "user", "content": "Write a haiku about free APIs."}
],
)
print(response.choices[0].message.content)
In production, read the key from the environment instead of hardcoding it, for example api_key=os.environ["DREAM_API_KEY"] in Python or apiKey: process.env.DREAM_API_KEY in JavaScript. Everything else is identical to the code you would write against any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. If you want streaming responses, add "stream": true to your request and read the chunks as they arrive.
Extra keys, and revoking one
One key is enough to start, but separate keys per project make life easier: you can see usage for each one and retire a single key without breaking everything else. On the account page, click "New key" to mint another, and copy it the same way. The daily quota is summed across every key on your account, so a second key buys you clearer usage reporting rather than a second budget.
If a key leaks, or you are done with a project, click "Revoke" next to it. That kills the key immediately, and anything still using it starts getting 401 responses, so revoke first and then roll out the replacement. Revoking one key never affects the others.
Check your remaining quota
Two limits apply. There is a burst limit of 100 requests per minute per IP, and a rolling 24 hour account quota of 5,000 requests and 500,000 tokens. To see where you are against both, call the quota endpoint with your key:
curl https://dreamprompting.com/api/v1/quota \
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
The response reports your per-minute rate_limit and your key's daily_quota, which is handy to check before a batch job. Every ordinary response also carries X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining and X-RateLimit-Reset headers, and the same numbers are shown on your account page. Cross either limit and you get a 429 rather than a surprise bill. For prototypes, demos, agents, and learning the OpenAI format, that ceiling is generous and you will rarely touch it. If you need more, just ask.
When you would want your own upstream keys
A free key is ideal for prototyping, but it is not meant to power a high volume production app running on a shared free pool. When you are ready to scale, the natural next step is to get your own free keys directly from upstream providers such as Groq or Google AI Studio. Both offer generous free tiers of their own, and because you would be using your own key, the rate limits apply to you alone. You keep the same OpenAI-compatible code and simply swap the base URL and key. Until then, one free DreamPrompting key covers all of it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the key really free? Yes. There is no charge, no billing, and no credit card. Sign in with Google and your first free LLM API key is already there to copy.
Where do I put the key? In the Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY header, or in the api_key field of any OpenAI-compatible client. Keep it in an environment variable rather than in your source.
What if I get a 401? The key is missing, mistyped, or revoked. Copy it fresh from the account page and check the header reads Bearer followed by a space and the key.
Can I have more than one key? Yes. Create as many as you need with "New key", and revoke any of them individually when a project ends or a key leaks.
Start building now
You can have your first response in under a minute. Grab your key from the account page, copy the curl command above, or read the full reference on the API docs page to see every endpoint and option. If you prefer to click around first, open the chat playground, which uses your account's key for you. That is the fastest free LLM API to try today.
